SEF for Beginners

How to make a Search Engine Friendly Website

First of all why do we need a SEF Website when our websites look is so good and appealing and also we have the latest Javascript codes with Web2 kind look. Dear friend this is where you went wrong. Search Engines are not at all interested in your website design but the contents inside. The code or syntax that you are using is correct or not. Search Engines don't like crawling through lines and lines of Javascript to get to the core areas that can help you get ranking. Therefore plan and position your page elements as required. Below I will list out a few parameters that you should check before submitting your site to Search Engines.

1. Title, Description and Meta Keywords

a)         Title of your Page plays an important role in search engine optimization. You should have a title relevant to your site contents. It should consist of higher searched keywords and length should be below 9. For a list of higher searched keywords you can mail me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

b)         Description is what you are going to describe in few words about your page contents. It should be between 20 to 30 words only. You can use something more attracting to search engines.

c)         Meta Keywords is the list of important Keywords that your site has. For the important keywords for your page you can check using the Page Analysis tool in this site.

2. Content

This is where your area of interest should be. Your contents should be unique and rich with the keyword for which you want a higher ranking. Carefully choose the keywords and don’t try to flood contents with keyword. Always try and ensure that the keywords are prominent within the text body, i.e. they appear near the beginning of the page, they are defined using the 'heading' tag. Use optimally and efficiently.

Certain things to follow inside the contents:

  1. a) If you're using table for laying out your page then make them simple and not too complex.
  2. b) Avoid using frames. These doesn’t go well with Spiders.
  3. c) Use external Javascript files. Which means if you need javascripts for navigation purposes, then use smaller scripts to call up the bulk of the javascript from a different file.
  4. d) Think twice on how to use graphics - make them relevant to your content and use the Alt tag for all images. Only Alt tags are readable by spiders not your images.
  5. e) It is best to position the main content of the page before the images if not at least with the images  nested between the text.

3. Keywords

Having good keywords is one of the most important areas to consider when designing a website/webpage. If you are aware which keywords are searched most in the net related to your website than you can use these keywords more and get a good score for your keywords.

One of the best tools for this is Wordtracker (www.wordtracker.com), which allows you to identify good competitive keywords for your pages.

There will be several keywords that would be associated to your website, but you have to choose a few only for good concentration and prominence of keywords. You can have a set of keywords when you check in google adwords. With these keywords you can start experimenting in your site.

4. Graphics

Graphics do play an important part and attracts more viewers to your site. But to search engines it makes no difference as search engines doesn’t have an eye to view, it is blind and reads only characters.  So use an Alt tag containing the relevant keyword(s). Although the use of images can be nice and very appealing to a website, it is also important to bear in mind that they shouldn't overpower the textual content of your page. Size your images properly. See that they don’t consume more bandwidth. More less in size is more better but it should not lose its beauty.

7. Site Map

Have a Site Map for the search engines to index your site properly. You can use any tool to create your sitemap or you can do it manually copying your url’s to a notepad. Sitemap can be submitted to search engines like Google and Yahoo in different formats like sitemap.txt or sitemap.xml etc. See that none of them leads to an error page.

8. Menu Navigation

Have a nice navigation menu and proper links leading to different pages of your site. Links should not be broken. This creates a negative point for you.

If you follow these basic steps you are onto a better ranking. Don’t expect to get it early but it may take some time depending upon your site content, number of hits, page views etc.

This topic is not yet over. There is still more to come.
